A network for counsellors, play therapists, family therapists, counselling social workers, drug and alcohol clinicians, psychologists and psychotherapists working with children and adolescents and their families.

We are skilled practitioners

Our aim is to promote quality child and adolescent therapy - through peer support; sharing of research, information and ideas; organising trainings; building relationships with agencies which fund or provide child therapy; liaising with agencies such as Work & Income, Oranga Tamariki and Department of Justice; making submissions to Government; and promoting best practice in child and adolescent therapy in Nelson and New Zealand.

CATA aims to be inclusive of the wide variety of theoretical and clinical approaches: art therapy, psychodynamic therapy, play therapy, Transactional Analysis, creative therapies, strengths based and solutions focussed therapies, cognitive behavioural therapy, attachment-based therapies, Maori therapies, and others.

We welcome the participation of allied professionals

We welcome those working with children and adolescents such as teachers, health workers, youth workers, support workers, and student or retired therapists. We have a student membership, and an Affiliate Membership for those whose work is allied to that of child and adolescent therapists. Student and Affiliate members are welcome at our monthly small group meetings.

We are not an accrediting body so members cannot cite membership of CATA as a qualification or endorsement. All therapist members are required to be members of an accrediting organisation such as the NZ Association of Counsellors, NZ Association of Psychotherapists, Play Therapy NZ, etc.  Full membership is available for such therapists.

CATA grew out of a Child Psychotherapy Study Group which began in Nelson in 2000 and has continued without interruption ever since.
